Sustainable Housing for Life Design Award

The Northern Rivers Sustainable House Day competition brief was to design a sustainable, modular single-family house that can be adapted over the life course of a family; e.g. first a couple alone, then with children, later renting out space etc. We designed a system with 20m2 modules that is highly flexible and adaptable for different locations and functions by connecting the modules with shaded decks and breezeways. This allows for customised layouts and to take advantage of local site conditions such as topography, climate, vegetation and views

The modular house is designed with a minimal footprint to save cost and resources while providing a spacious feel through indoor-outdoor connection and multi-functional spaces. It uses natural and low-zero toxic materials and finishes, is fully demountable and designed to sequester/ offset more carbon than it takes to construct and operate the building during its life cycle.

Net Zero Design has been working with clients, industry partners and universities to develop a cost-effective system with the highest sustainability standard possible. Using today’s technologies, the system will be refined with new materials and construction methods when available to further improve sustainability standard and cost.
